South Korean officials have announced that they have troops at the ready to carry out a Kim Jong-un assassination if the country feels North Korea poses a threat with its nuclear weapons. North Korea has been making headlines lately with its unsanctioned testing of nuclear weapons, which has put the globe on edge.

Coming right out and saying you are ready to take out a world leader may seem like a country is showing its hand, but CNN reported South Korea has not been shy about it. While having a contingency plan of this magnitude in place is not necessarily uncommon, South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-goo’s blunt answer about the topic surprised some. When asked if they have troops at the ready, he was pretty straightforward:

“Yes, we do have such a plan. South Korea has a general idea and plan to use precision missile capabilities to target the enemy’s facilities in major areas as well as eliminating the enemy’s leadership.”

Daniel Pinkston of Troy University told CNN how many presidents would want to have a similar plan in place if a country poses a threat to them. He said, “Not training for it and having that capability would be a mistake.” And North Korea, which can come across as a bit unstable, has seemed to have given South Korea justification for it. The country recently held its fifth nuclear weapons test earlier this month, which was a direct violation of United Nations sanctions. And South Korea has warned foreign officials that they are confident North Korea has another test coming soon.
