Looking Back At Joan Rivers’ Brief Time As A WWE Ring Announcer

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting pretty sick of funny people dying.  Robin Williams left us last month (was it really that long ago?), and yesterday we got the news that Joan Rivers passed away.  She was a show business legend who absolutely stood the test of time, and I’ll certainly miss her.  I’ll do my best not to fill this piece up with Dot Matrix quotes.

Much like Robin Williams and his Tribute to the Troops appearance, Joan also had a brief, tangential contribution to the world of pro wrestling.  Back in April 1986, she appeared at WrestleMania 2 as the guest ring announcer for the boxing match between Mr. T and Roddy Piper.  WWE recently posted the video on their YouTube channel in remembrance:

G. Gordon Liddy was a boxing judge.  The Eighties, man.

If you’ll remember, WrestleMania 2 marked a lot of firsts.  It was the first WrestleMania split across three venues (New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles), the first one to happen on a Monday, and the first one to nationally air on pay-per-view.  The boxing match between Piper and Mr. T served as the main event of the New York card.  Naturally, we’d like to send our condolences to Joan’s family in this difficult time.  I hope she’s conducting another painfully funny interview with Oderus Urungus right now.
