Lucha Underground Brought The USA To The Lucha Libre World Cup And Won It All, America-Style

In the second annual Lucha Libre World Cup held by Mexican promotion AAA, a team of Lucha Underground All-Stars captured the gold. Managed by none other than Dario Cueto himself, Johnny Mundo, Cage, and Chavo Guerrero defeated “Team AAA” (consisting of fellow LU star Pentagón Jr., El Texano Jr., as well as Psycho Clown) in the final round to win the cup.

“Team Lucha Underground,” as they were known, became the second champions of the event after El Patrón Alberto (Alberto Del Rio), Myzteziz (original Sin Cara), and Rey Mysterio captured the win in the inaugural event last year.

Seeing those three teams together may be a bit jarring if you’re only caught up to the current airings of Lucha Underground. Cage utterly destroyed both of his teammates in recent weeks on the show, but I guess the trio banded together for the greater good.

Along with Team Lucha Underground and Team AAA, the tournament was filled with teams from other promotions like “Team TNA” (EC3, Eli Drake, and Tyrus), “Team Pro Wrestling Noah” (Taiji Ishimori, Naomichi Marufuji, and Maybach Taniguchi), and other random wonderful teams such as “Team Resto Del Mundo” (Mil Muertes, Rockstar Spud, and Apolo).

“Team Mexico International,” consisting of Rey Mysterio Jr., El Dragon Azteca Jr., and Dr. Wagner Jr., picked up third place in the tournament, while on the women’s side, “Team Mexico” (Faby Apache, Mari Apache, and Lady Apache) got the win.

Someone pull some strings and get The New Day and The Bullet Club in this tournament next year, please and thank you.
