The Rock On Deflategate: Defenses Need To Say ‘We Don’t Give A F*ck’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was a football player at the University of Miami during its peak era. That was his introduction to pro wrestling, and possibly bending the rules a little. We told you yesterday about The Rock’s interview with Sports Illustrated, Johnson walked writer Justin Barrasso through his journey from bench player at the nation’s most elite program to worldwide action movie star. When asked about the Patriots latest scandal, Deflategate, he betrayed a certain bias about the, um, adjustments that great defensive lines make to win games:

Johnson was fond of the expression, “It doesn’t matter!” during his time in wrestling. The same can be said for his opinion on over-inflated footballs, under-inflated ones, and the Wells Report.

“We were raised in an environment at the University of Miami where [defensive line coach Ed Orgeron] would say, ‘We don’t give a f*ck,’” explained Johnson. “You go after the quarterback the exact same way. You pin your ears back and get after it. And if the quarterback is able to get the ball off, then it’s your fault.”

That’s a kind way of saying that players are aware that cheating happens, and that the competitive teams are prepared for anything when they take the gridiron. Whether or not The Rock is buddies with Tom Brady doesn’t matter either because champs know that it’s a dirty game.

But somebody’s gotta win it.
