Desiigner Finally Debuts His New Project, ‘New English’

GOOD

Desiigner’s debut project New English is finally here and calling it highly anticipated would be a massive understatement. Fans and naysayers alike have waited months to hear something, anything from the Brooklyn-based artist after his “Panda” hit blew up out of nowhere late last year and ultimately landed at the top of the Billboard charts. The song made him a household name in rap circles — even though no one really knew a damn thing about him — and eventually landed him a deal with G.O.O.D. Music, but also upped the ante on expectations around his potential.

New English is the first set of songs the 19-year-old has released since arriving to the game. The project clocks in with a lean 10 songs in total with only two features listed currently: Pusha T and King Savage. One of the toughest tasks he currently faces is distinguishing himself from the comparisons to Future, which have nagged him constantly since his sound shares strong similarities to the Southern trap rap star.

After listening to New English, we’re likely to add G Herbo (“Make It Out”) and Tory Lanez (“Shooters”) right behind Future as guys who Desiigner sounds like. However, his throaty, Auto-Tuned vocals and high energy do a lot to separate him from his counterparts. Tracks like “Talk Regardless” and “New Day” stand out and the overall production of the project help him begin to carve his own lane at least partially. Where that lane leads, time will tell but it starts here with New English.
