Kendrick Lamar Picked The Right Fan To Freestyle Out Of His Brooklyn Audience

Kendrick Lamar’s performance Friday night at his American Express-sponsored secret show at Music Hall of Williamsburg was a memorable one for fans, both those in attendance and the ones livestreaming the event from home. But there was at least one fan who will likely claim it meant more to him and it’d be hard to argue against it.

In the video above, Kendrick can be seen inviting a fan on stage to engage in a freestyle with him in front of the packed house. At first, the guy shares a piece of history with K.Dot. “I rocked with Kendrick at his first show at Southpaw — I don’t know if he remember — in Brooklyn,” he said. “He was doing songs off Section.80.” The special guest ends up requesting the chance to kick a few lines a capella and proceeds to nail it as Lamar sits back, smiles and approves. As he returns to the mic, Kendrick tells the crowd, “Remember that name, Kemba.”

If the name sounds familiar, it should, especially to readers of Beware’s Block. The lucky fan wasn’t just a regular guy by any means. It was actually Kemba, the artist formerly known as YC The Cynic, who’s been putting in work since around 2010 and recently released his Negus project, which includes the standout tracks “Already” and “New Black Theory.”

Below, check out an additional clip of the the two going back and forth with off the top of the dome flows for a second before Kendrick gets warmed up and takes over. You can also check out tweets from Kemba, who still seemed to be waiting on someone to pinch him and say the dream was over.
