The investigation into Prince’s death turns up another notch as authorities reportedly have set their focus on two doctors. According to TMZ, law enforcement officials are looking to see if the physicians were involved in legally or illegally helping the singer gain access to the medications that caused his death.

[S]ources say authorities are taking a hard look at Prince’s primary physician Dr. Michael Schulenberg and renowned addiction specialist Dr. Howard Kornfeld, to determine if either of them crossed the legal line by writing prescriptions to Prince or otherwise facilitating the singer’s acquisition of meds.

We’re told three agencies are deep into the investigation — the FBI, the DEA and the Carver County District Attorney’s Office.

Prince’s cause of death was confirmed in early June with authorities indicating that he died from an opioid overdose. Family and friends have previously told the media that the singer was seeking treatment for addiction.

Dr. Schulenberg was at Prince’s residence when his body was found. According to the report, he has not been in practice in Minnesota since Prince died in April. Dr. Kornfeld is still actively practicing medicine in Marin County, CA.

The 57-year-old star was scheduled to meet with Kornfield, an addiction treatment specialist, at the time of his death. “The plan was to quickly evaluate his health and devise a treatment plan,” Kornfield’s lawyer William Mauzy told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “The doctor was planning on a lifesaving mission.”

The investigation could potentially go on for months. The district attorney will ultimately decide whether or not the state will press charges.
