Stream Vince Staples’ Fiery New EP ‘Prima Donna’ Right Now

Vince Staples is back with Prima Donna EP, what stands to be one of those talked about releases of 2016 once the year-end wrap-ups begin to publish. The 22-year-old Cali native’s made a name for himself with his no-holds-barred brand of music that can often be characterized as unapologetically dark.

The fact is that’s exactly how Staples wants his music to be since he wants to tell stories that reflect what goes on in the Long Beach area he grew up in, his neighborhood Ramona Park usually playing a central point of reference from song to song. Staples has often said he didn’t get into rap to be famous or buy a fancy care. His sole purpose is straightforward: he wants “niggas to stop dying,” he told Fader. Rap is just a vehicle used to communicate with a wider swath of people.

Of the EP’s seven tracks, only two include features with A$AP Rocky coming through on the title track and Kilo Kish pops up for “Loco.” The rest of the release is Staples riding solo, which is what needs to happen for him. He’s one of those guys in the new crop of MCs who has proven time and time again that he has tons to say, no matter the topic.

The project comes a day earlier than originally announced, perhaps due in part to the fact Staples is actually premiering the EP on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Thursday.
