Kanye West spent Thursday debuting his first drop for adidas Originals, dubbed ‘YEEZY SEASON 1.’ There were pics and short clips floating around but adidas has done us all a service by releasing a full video from the event.
A few quick thoughts.
1. “Wolves,” the song with Vic and Sia, can be heard much clearer here.
2. The Yeezy Boost lows look nice and most people will probably take to them over the higher cut of the Yeezy 750 Boost we’ve been see so much of the past few days. Of course, the inevitable “they look like Roshes” comments will come, but that’s only partially true. From afar, that critique could be applied to so many shoes. But the low looks to have a Primeknit upper, which leaves the Roshe category miles behind in material makeup and fit. Think more like Flyknit, just better fitting IMO.
3. But, you know how they could’ve avoided the comparisons? By making a shoe that didn’t share similarities with a Roshe. Which leads to…
4. The fine print:
“For Autumn/Winter 2015, Kanye West and adidas Originals will unveil a bold new proposition: YEEZY SEASON 1, a collection of apparel and footwear that cherishes universality and timelessness. Described by West as the world’s first “solutions-based” clothing line, the individual pieces define a style that matches the relentless pace of contemporary lives.”
For the life of me, I don’t know why certain corners of the net are all in a tizzy as if the 750 Boost was the only shoe ‘Ye was doing. Said it before and I’ll say it again: just wait. The man and the brand are doing whole collections. Not one shoe or just one collection, even. We’re looking at multiples, the same way they’ve done with Nigo and Pharrell. adidas being willing to allow him to do apparel and footwear with their support was one of the main reasons ‘Ye reiterated for coming on board.
Give it time and let them cook.
