The World Cup’s perfect for unlikely heroes to save their country’s asses. Take Belgium for example. An early 1-0 deficit to Algeria came thanks to Jan Vertonghen’s foolish challenge drawing a penalty kick. The strike got converted by Sofiane Feghouli and Belgium struggled to equalize for the rest of the half.

Then, in the second half, substitute Marouane Fellaini’s got Belgium on the board with the tournament’s fluffiest header so far. The man’s more known for his top 10 afro than his actual abilities after a rough year at Manchester United. However, his goal meant more opportunities had to come.

Dries Mertens followed up with a fantastic breakaway finish and, with that, locked in three points for Belgium. The result’s good for all of us since we won’t have to hear lazy narratives on Belgium’s “golden generation failing to meet expectations,” or whatever.

So yeah, thank you for not caving, Belgium.
