Kendrick Lamar Lends A Verse To Newcomer Jasmine V’s “That’s Me Right There”

THE CHALLENGE: Transform an objectively attractive, moderately talented teen sensation into a crossover success. Your subject will be recognizable to the Nickelodeon audience and Justin Bieber fans, but more by face than anything else, and even then she’s not a star. You want something bigger for her. Something even more mainstream. Something that can net a bit more money.

So it’s going at the Interscope offices, where some executives are brainstorming different ways to make Jasmine V’s career happen. A Kendrick Lamar feature is obviously a pretty big piece to that puzzle. And so, we have “That’s Me Right There,” a powerful, confident coming-out party of a single that sees V lacing strong vocals over a brass-friendly backdrop.

What’s remarkable is that, after two or three listens, Jasmine actually provides the better half of the song. Not that Kendrick phoned his verse in, but he’s definitely using the space to experiment with his flow a bit to less-than-stellar results. If nothing else, hit play out of curiosity. It’ll be interesting to see if this one has some legs to carry it.

The track is set to appear on an unnamed project releasing in the fall.
