After dropping To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar seemingly vanished. With just one video and sparse media appearances since then, he disappeared just as quickly as he showed up to release the album.
On Wednesday, he turned up for an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, equipped with a couple from Chi-town stepping behind him and a painter cooking up something special for Ellen, as he performed the cut “These Walls.” The Compton rapper was the spirited performer he always is, increasing the energy for the song’s hectic third verse and going out with a bang.
And don’t disregard the couple stepping like your favorite auntie and uncle at a wedding after a few drinks. Remember when his momma asked Kendrick to make something she could step to on “Real” from GKMC? Well, clearly he didn’t forget and he drives the point home here by including a stepping couple and peppering in shoutouts to his parents’ Chicago hometown, which ultimately adds layers to an already dope performance.
Afterwards, he chatted with Ellen about collaborating with Taylor Swift for “Bad Blood,” being a positive influence to the kids in Compton, challenging Ellen to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and more.
