Candidly speaking, Kendrick Lamar appeared much like a niche artist at this time last year. His style was so unorthodox it seemed his music might be limited to only a small audience. A cult rapper if you will. Well, that went out the window and now Schoolboy Q, a man with an equally unique mic presence, is at bat and dropping the (presumably) final, K. Dot-featured single entitled, “Blessed,” a little under two weeks before Habits & Contradictions’ releases.
I picked up on Q’s music a lot faster than I did with Kendrick’s, and even as recently as three months ago I could almost swear that I was one of the few to do so, but this tape is looking like it’s catching a lot more ears than last year’s Setbacks. For two artists possessing strikingly uncommon styles, they have such a fluid chemistry together that it’s almost even difficult to discern between the two. And to those who are quick to say Kendrick killed it, listen to the record again before typing. ScHoolboy goes hard the entire way through, keeping pace with his fellow TDE labelmate, and perhaps even going the distance to some ears.
#HnC dropping January 14th.
