“A lot of people now think I’m a shoe. They don’t even know I was a tennis player. The shoe has really taken on a life of its own, way beyond me.” – Stan Smith

Real talk. Growing up, I thought Smith was Adi Dassler’s favorite uncle or something. Turns out he’s way more famous for his signature kicks than anything he’s ever done on the court. Since its creation, the adidas’ Stan Smith model has reached the hallowed ground of a classic sneaker. Trends might come and go, but the Stan Smiths will always be a classic addition to anyone’s closet. I’m not sure why adidas decided to discontinue the shoe, but I’m definitely geeked that its back.

Celebrated around the world, Stan Smith is an American tennis player, whose namesake shoe was there when he won titles in major tournaments, including the 1968 U.S. Open and the 1970 Australian Open. Transcending far beyond its success as merely a tennis sneaker, though, the shoe has evolved to become a revered style icon, beloved for its clean, streamlined aesthetic by designers, editors and collectors alike. As a result, the shoe has been introduced in numerous colors and fabrics over the years, in addition to the classic, all-white with-green-ankle-tab option.
