Well, that happened fast. After back-and-forth rumors of Stephen Colbert replacing David Lettermen as host of The Late Show, we now have confirmation:

The news follows Letterman’s retirement announcement from just last week.

Needless to say, this is huge for the entertainment industry. Questions are going to surround the story well into 2015, when Colbert takes Letterman’s chair, but to discuss one, what will become of Stephen Colbert, the character? Colbert’s faux-Right wing persona has been a Comedy Central staple since his show first premiered, and something that probably can’t get emulated on a major network like CBS. The audiences are too different, the stakes much higher for CBS.

We won’t know until the show airs, but feel free to speculate. This is the Internet, after all.
