On Blade Icewood And “Chips On The Pistons”

You won’t see me contributing too much on the sports front around here. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t have strong opinions on my local squads – specifically, the Detroit Pistons. See, I’ve been expending my energy rooting at excess for that team since Oliver Miller was abusing floor space and Eric Montross was jump-shooting free throws. I saw the Pistons fall from grace, muddle into mediocrity and lose to Atlanta in the playoffs so consistently, watching Steve Smith execute our hopes and dreams with three pointers just became a given.

Then, we got our American-made color scheme back. That’s when Joe D put together a once in a lifetime championship team, who raised the bar so high our franchise couldn’t keep up and ended up right back in Lottery-bound oblivion within six years of a championship.

Now, after basically going ghost while Charlie V pussified the Bad Boys image and Brandon Knight single-handedly flat-lined our franchise last season, I’m actually excited about the ‘Stons this year. Yes, Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings are somewhat flaky on paper, but teaming that type of athletic ability with our already daunting front-court of combo of Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe will leave opposing defenses with serious problems – especially with Chauncey Billups back and offering up the needed veteran leadership to bring the pieces together. Bias aside, making the playoffs for the first time since 2008 seems plausible.

To keep that optimism up, let’s spin one of the late great Blade Icewood’s many local hits, “Chips On Pistons.” I’m not a betting guy, but this one seems appropriate for the first time in a long time.
