Blame Puffy. Again. Ever since the Harlem hitmaker added The Notorious B.I.G., Rampage Da Last Boy Scout, and LL Cool J to Craig Mack’s hit single, the word remix has taken on a whole new meaning. Now a remix is a who’s who of hip-hop at that moment in time rapping on the original beat of a hit song the same way the original artist did. Gone are the days of Pete Rock or DJ Premier giving a hot song new meaning and life with an entirely different beat.

While Wiz Khalifa hasn’t recreated the golden era here, he has bucked the trend and completely updated the production on his hit single “We Dem Boyz,” replacing the original’s more aggro tenor with Sledgren, Ricky P, and RMB Justize’s subdued and atmospheric take. The straining, G-funk, yowl, and Wiz’s new harmonic hook adds a new dimension to the track. Hip-Hop’s who’s who still make an appearance in the form of Rick Ross, ScHoolboy Q, and Nas, but they bring a welcome dose of lyricism that wasn’t present in the chant-heavy original.

Wiz Khalifa is ramping up the marketing machine for Blacc Hollywood, which is set to release in the dog days of summer on August 19. If the lead single and it’s remix are any sign, the new album may be as hot as the weather.

Update: Per a tweet Wiz just sent this isn’t the final version of the remix. Hopefully we’ll find out if anyone else will join the festivities soon.
