There was a frightening scene at Boston’s Fenway Park on Friday. According to multiple outlets, a female fan sitting down the third-base line was struck by a broken bat during a Red Sox-Athletics game. The incident occurred during Brett Lawrie’s at-bat in the top of the second inning. The woman, who was with her son and husband, is said to be facing “life threatening injuries.” She was taken from the stadium on a stretcher to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Alex Merlas, a fan who witnessed the accident, described what he saw in an interview with the Boston Globe:
“Brett Lawrie hit the ball and the bat snapped in half near the end of the bat. It hit on the forehead to the top of the head … it was a blunt trauma and it was a lot of blood. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much blood.”
Brett Lawrie's broken bat strikes fan in head on the third base side. Leaves field strapped to gurney, bloody and screaming. Awful scene.

It looks like fan who left game had a child with her. Child was carried out by medics while she shrieked in pain. Brutal to see and hear.

Lawrie said it was a maple bat that shattered. Mentioned there is not much protective netting at Fenway. Expressed hope fan will be OK.

Obviously, this is a sobering scene. Nets are placed behind home plate to prevent accidents like this, but this is enough to make you wonder if those nets should extend further down the first-and-third-base lines. That’s another conversation for another day, though. Here’s hoping the woman is okay.
