Jason Day has won his first-ever major title with his PGA Championship victory at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisc. on Sunday. The Australian native finished the day at 20 under par, with phenom Jordan Speith finishing just three strokes behind him. Day has six top ten finishes since 2013 — Speith and Rory McIlroy had a combined 10 top ten finishes in the same span.

Day began Sunday’s round with a two-stroke lead, and held Speith off throughout the day — had Speith won on Sunday, he would have been the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 2000 to win three majors in one year.

“I felt like it was a real kind of growing moment for me because every now and then, we get to a point in our games where it’s O.K. to just go, ‘O.K., it’s all right; I can just hit it in the middle of the green, or I don’t really need to hole this putt,’ ” Day said via the New York Times. “It’s taken a long time to get to the point where I can actually feel a lot more comfortable in a position where I can just go out and attack.”

Day was obviously emotional as he realized he had the victory in the bag late Sunday afternoon.
