Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel headed to a local hospital after getting hit in the head by a Memphis defender on Thursday night. Kiel took a snap on a third down, ran a read option with his running back and decided to keep the ball.

After getting the first down, Kiel slid and set his team up right around midfield. However, as he was sliding, he was met by Memphis defensive back Chauncey Lanier, who lowered his shoulder and hit Kiel’s left shoulder along with the side of his head. Following the hit, Kiel laid motionless on the ground, where he was tended to by medical personnel.

Here is the hit from another angle, via Deadspin:

After initially getting ejected and called for targeting, the officials reviewed the play and decided to overturn the call. Lanier is still in the game, while Kiel was loaded into an ambulance and sent to the hospital. The hit comes a week after Kiel appeared to injure his head or neck during Cincy’s game against Miami (OH).

While this latest incident was a scary sight, there is some good news: According to reports, Kiel is conscious and has movement in his extremities.
