North Carolina’s Governor Defends Cam Newton From ‘The Media’

The Panthers are 8-0 and clearly the team to beat in the NFC. With the win over the Packers, their biggest competition remaining in the fight for the first seed is the Arizona Cardinals. Leading this for Carolina is Cam Newton, who has come into his own and is playing like the star the Panthers hoped he’d be when he was drafted. He’s doing it with his best wide receiver on injured reserve, too. Cam is a stud, and has been getting better every year and seems to be entering his prime.

The Governor of North Carolina is clearly a fan of this stud quarterback, and on Monday tweeted a sick burn on someone who once upon a time didn’t think Newton would turn out to be much:

Coming out of Auburn, Cam Newton was seen as a huge bust candidate to a lot of people. One such person was Bleacher Report’s Jim Folsom. He wrote this scathing takedown of Newton before he was drafted.

Some delicious highlights:

Cam Newton is a sure-fire bust. I am so certain of this that if he is the Panthers’ starting quarterback in 2016, I will buy a Cam Newton jersey and stand in the stadium parking lot in my underwear when the Panthers come to Tampa Bay and hold a sign proclaiming that Auburn rules over Florida and Carolina rules over Tampa Bay.

He will make Ryan Leaf only the second-biggest draft bust in history.

Did he get by at Auburn on sheer athletic ability? Of course he did.

Cam cannot hit the broad side of a barn with a football.

In five years, when Tebow is leading Denver into the playoffs and Cam Newton is riding someone’s bench, remember this article.

Daymn, son. Folsom was angry. He brings up several valid points at the time of the draft process concerning Cam’s mere one year of success, but then you start reaching the later bits of the article and the Tebow comparisons come in, and that’s when Folsom’s true colors expose themselves. A quick glance at his B/R writer profile reveals his big secret: He’s a massive Florida Gators fan.

Looking at his Twitter profile, it seems like Folsom has already paid dearly for his mistake and has suffered some harassment from snarky Panther fans.

I really love that he managed to get in that dig at Obama. Because it’s Obama’s fault that he wrote an incredibly biased sports article about a football player and got trash-talked for it when he was proven wrong.

But in the end, it looks like Folsom may have achieved self-awareness.
