Special teams are one-third of a football game. During the first quarter of the 2016 SEC Championship Game between Alabama and Florida, special teams gave us one of college football’s craziest sequences of the year.
It started with Alabama’s punt team blocking an attempt by the Gators. The ball fell right into the hands of Crimson Tide running back Joe Jacobs, who followed his blocks and made his way into the end zone to make it 16-7. It was the second defensive/special teams touchdown of the day for Alabama.
The weirdness came on the next play, when Florida blocked the PAT. Because this is a live ball, the Gators’ David Reese scooped it up, took off down the sideline with a bunch of blockers, and went all the way to the opposite end zone.

Instead of the Crimson Tide going up by 10, this play made it a one-score game. Special teams get under-appreciated every now and then, so it’s always fun when a blocked kick or punt goes for the score. Seeing that happen back-to-back is extra cool, if only because stuff like this never happens.
