Anderson Silva Out Of UFC 198 And May Need Gallbladder Surgery

Why can’t we ever have perfection? It’s just so rare for the UFC and their fight cards, isn’t it? UFC 198 was looking to be one of the best main cards the promotion has ever put on. So good in fact, Anderson Silva would be out of a main event for the first time in years as the co-main event fighting Uriah Hall. But now, that is over. Silva has been pulled from the fight three days from the event due to abdominal pain that could lead to gallbladder surgery.

Jeff Davidson, the UFC’s medical consultant, told Yahoo Sports:

“Anderson developed abdominal discomfort [Monday and] further evaluation today is consistent with acute cholecystitis. He will be seen by a surgeon today for possible surgery.”

Step off the ledge, lovers of Anderson Silva — a normal gallbladder surgery only takes a few weeks to recover from. Granted, Anderson Silva is 41-years-old, and there’s no telling if this will affect his training, but Silva has made it clear over the last few days/weeks/months that he has every intention of finishing his 15-fight contract that he signed in 2014.

The UFC has said they are looking for an extremely late-replacement for Uriah Hall, but there’s no doubt this is a huge blow for both Anderson Silva, and the 45,000 fans who had hoped to see him fight this weekend in his hometown of Curitiba, Brazil.

Anderson Silva is now 0-3-1 in his last 4 fights. This is another in a long line of disappointments for the fighter who many consider the best to ever step in the cage. And if for some reason this is the end, keep in mind that this is how careers end in combat sports — with a whimper.

Hopefully for Anderson, he can go out with one last bang.
