Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio, is one of the top high schools in the state, with recruits for Ohio State and Michigan State on the roster. With all the manchildren on the field, it can be hard to remember that it’s just a high-school game — only the smaller crowds, cheaper uniforms, and lower camera angles reveal the ruse.
Well, those and the other team, Canton McKinley, who lost 49-0, bless their hearts. Perhaps the low point of the game for McKinley was this miskicked punt, which ricocheted off the rear end of an offensive lineman. Hoban senior Jack Griffith (who has a name like a linebacker from the 1940s) was lucky enough to have the ball land in his lap, and fast enough to take it back to the end zone. It’s a shame for McKinley that a butt had to be involved in their failure, because now it gets a hashtag — #buttpunt — and an added layer of ignominy.
Though it’s a funny video — and you better believe I’ve watched it a dozen times — it’s hard to laugh quite as hard since it’s just high school kids. In high school, most of us would struggle to punt a ball even that far in the air, and the fact that this kid has a spot on the team means he probably doesn’t do that every time.
Okay, now that we’ve established that we’re really on the McKinley punter’s side, #buttpunt. #Buttpunt you guys.
