The downside of Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out is all the bottom feeders trying to capitalize on the moment. This includes TMZ, which baited has-been comedian DL Hughley into going all mean girl on the transgender athlete and reality star.

“Caitlyn Jenner put on a dress,” says Hughley, comparing her to the namesake of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award that she won at the ESPY’s on Wednesday, who he said fought segregation and AIDS with dignity.

He then goes on with a blunt “no” when the TMZ cameraman asks him if he thinks Jenner is beautiful. “In a Ms. Doubtfire way,” he clarifies. “This week we had the media telling us that Caitlyn Jenner was beautiful and that Serena Williams looked like a man. That was a little weird to me. The man looks like a woman and the woman looks like a man, that’s ridiculous.”

If you read between the lines (and you barely have to), Hughley is basically denying Jenner’s right to identify as a woman, as well as her bravery in being upfront about being transgender in a world where people routinely kill people for identifying as such. He does so by insulting her looks, so ironically, in his own hateful way, he’s treating Jenner as the woman he denies her to be.
