Was This On-Field Punch During A College Football Game ‘Assault And Battery’?

We don’t hear a lot about Division III college football unless something completely insane happened. What happened in Saturday’s game between Pennsylvania schools Washington & Jefferson and Westminster certainly falls into that category.

Basically, there was a fight after a kick return. The series of events leading up to said fight are a little murky, but we know it features Westminster RB Isaiah Faulk going wild at the end of the play. First, he flies in out of nowhere and goes low on an opponent as the play is ending. Then, he went after opposing defensive back Zak Dickey, took him to the ground, and just started punching his head. According to the Observer-Report, the incident got Faulk ejected and Dickey was taken to the hospital for X-rays. Understandably, Washington & Jefferson coach Mike Sirianni was furious over the play.

“You’ll get two different stories, but the kid threw a punch that blatantly would be assault and battery,” Sirianni said. “It was one of the most atrocious things I’ve seen on a football field ever and I’ve been coaching and playing. There’s no reason for that. We did not react accordingly, but I have not seen anything as blatant and dirty.

If there is some good news for Washington & Jefferson, it’s that it went on to win, 35-31. There is no word on any kind of charges or disciplinary actions against Faulk.
