Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of two men who were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver early Sunday morning along I-70 in Indiana.

According to information from police gathered by the Indy Star, Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffery Monroe, thought to be a ride-sharing service driver, were standing by a stopped vehicle in the westbound emergency lane along I-70 when a black F-150 veered into the lane, hitting and killing both men.

“One of the people struck was thrown into the center lane of I-70,” Sgt. John Perrine said in a statement, via the Indy Star. “Shortly after the crash, and before any 911 calls were received, Trooper Ty Mays was driving through the area and noticed a vehicle in front of him make an evasive maneuver to the left.”

Police identified the driver as Alex Cabrera Gonsales, who was apprehended after he tried to flee the scene on foot and was taken into custody.

“It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license,” Perrine said in a statement. “He was transported to the Marion County Jail, the result of the test for intoxication is pending.”

Jackson was originally signed out of Georgia Southern by the Arizona Cardinals in 2015 before landing with the Colts, first as a practice squad player in 2015 and then as a member of the 53-man roster in 2016. Jackson started in eight games in 2016, but spent 2017 on injured reserve. He was 26 years old.

Colts owner Jim Irsay offered his thoughts to Jackson’s family on Twitter once the news of his tragic death became public.
