The Big South notched it's first NCAA tournament victory as #11 seed Winthrop defeated #6 seed Notre Dame yesterday. Notre Dame senior Russell Carter expressed the frustration of the Fightin' Irish:
"My season is over. My career is over. We're done," an angry, stone-faced Russell Carter said inside the Irish locker room, where words were as hard to come by as consolation smiles.
Carter, who will graduate with a degree in public house management, will return to his native County Mayo in Ireland in June to open "Russell's Pub". Although the Fightin' Irish made a furious charge in the second half going on a 20-3 run, the tiny Rock Hill, SC school held on for the victory. Notre Dame fans were not very pleased with their team's performance. "I've never even heard of Winthrop or the fucking Big South," complained William Tweed of Gary, IN. "I usually celebrate St. Patrick's Day by wetting my whistle and singing the old songs, but I guess now I'll have to drive to South Carolina and kick somebody's ass. I'll have to push back my St. Pat's revelry for a few days which will cut into my weekday drinking, so I guess I'll be back on the dole again by next weekend." -KD
