Watch The Houston Texans Pay Homage To The Glorious ‘Top Gun’ Volleyball Scene

WARNING: Do not watch the above video or read any further if you have not seen the volleyball scene from Top Gun. Preferably, you’ve seen the whole movie, as it is a triumph of ’80s cheese, but, at the very least, watch the most homoerotic scene not involving full nudity or kissing in movie history. Did you watch it? Okay, great. Now watch the above scene from Tuesday night’s episode of Hard Knocks, and try not to giggle with joy.

The Texans like to make up games to pass their downtime in a way that strengthens team bonds and keeps the competitive spirit up, which is cool. The game they were playing, where you have to get a little rubber ball over a net using anything but your hands, is called swennis, which I imagine is a strange portmanteau of soccer and tennis, with a “w” to give it a good ring. I have to hand it to them: Swennis rolls right off the tongue. But it was HBO’s decision to soundtrack their swennis footage with the Top Gun volleyball montage music, “Playing with the Boys” by Kenny Loggins. It is an inspired choice, made even better by the editing, which nails the energy of the Top Gun scene, as well. This is Hard Knocks‘ greatest achievement.
