Jarryd Hayne’s NFL dream has hit a little bump in the road, as the San Francisco 49ers have waived the former rugby star. According to Stuff.co.nz, Hayne learned of the team’s decision to place him on waivers while he was sitting on the team bus.

Jarryd Hayne reportedly found out he had been waived from the San Francisco 49ers roster while on the team bus, news which made him “shocked and upset”.

Australia’s Channel Seven has reportedly spoken to Hayne’s Australian agent, Wayne Beavis, who revealed the news was out of the blue for his client whose NFL career is up in the air.

The Niners needed to make room on the main roster, as they wanted to promote running back Kendall Gaskins from the practice squad. Because he was put on waivers, Hayne could be claimed by any team, and if that doesn’t happen, he’ll head down to San Francisco’s practice squad.

Based on a tweet that he sent out, Hayne does seem to be taking the move well, although Stuff.co.nz reported that he was “really shocked, very upset about this.”

Hayne was one of the biggest rugby stars on earth, but decided that he wanted to try football this year. He became the first Professional Rugby League player to play in the NFL earlier this year, and there was some talk that the Niners playing a preseason game in Australia somewhere down the line partially thanks to how Hayne has helped grow the game Down Under.

As for his production, Hayne wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire during the regular season. He had eight carries for 25 yards, a catch for seven yards, eight punt returns for 76 yards, and a tackle with no touchdowns. His numbers in the preseason were outstanding, as he ran the ball 25 times for 175 yards and returned 10 punts for 163 yards.
