Kansas Completes Its Loss To FCS South Dakota State With A Fumbled Spike

Kansas has a long way to go, and David Beaty has his work cut out for him after the mess Charlie Weis left behind. That much was clear in Week 1, as the Jayhawks fell behind 31-7 early to the mighty Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. To their credit, Kansas fought back and had a chance to tie the game down 41-38 with the clock winding down, and the team didn’t hang its head throughout the game after getting out to that big deficit.

The problem? Kansas didn’t even get a chance to kick the tying field goal, as the snap was fumbled in an attempt to spike the ball, and the officials called Montell Cozart down (which kept the clock running). Obviously everyone’s going to want to make fun of the Jayhawks for losing to an FCS team and for losing in a relatively embarrassing way, but it’s the beginning of the season. Even the refs have trouble holding onto the ball – as we saw in the Colorado-Hawaii game on Thursday night.

This is still a huge win for the Jackrabbits. Any FCS win over a Power Five school is, regardless of how far said program has fallen. For Beaty and the Jayhawks, it’s time to look at film and try to get better. This is a long season, and this Week 1 snafu won’t matter if the team gets a lot better throughout the year.
