Does Superstar Prospect Kris Bryant Have A Right To Be Upset With The Cubs?

All Kris Bryant wanted was for his spring training to matter.

After being under the impression that a great spring would give him an opportunity to win a job with the big league club on opening day, being sent down to AAA on Monday was a bitter pill to swallow for the young prospect. It is tough to imagine what else he could have done to win the job after he hit nine home runs in only 40 at bats during the Cactus League. And based on his quotes to ESPN on Thursday, it’s clear he felt the same way.

“I don’t want to say I’m mad or anything, I’m just extremely disappointed,” Bryant told ESPN on Thursday. “I wanted my performance to matter, and to me it felt like it didn’t matter as much as I thought it would…I’m a big believer if you go out there and perform and work hard and you earn it then I believe you should get that chance to play up there. I guess it was viewed differently than I thought.”

By sending Bryant to the minors for approximately 10 games to start the season, the Cubs will automatically gain one more year of control before he can become a free agent, so despite team President Theo Epstein’s comments denying as such, this is clearly a business move rather than a baseball one.
