This NBA D-League Announcer Wouldn’t Stop Making Adele Jokes, And It’s Cringeworthy

R.J. Choppy is a radio host in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who, apparently, is a big fan of Adele’s music. During a recent game between the Texas Legends and the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA’s Developmental League, Choppy was on the call and decided to make his love of the English singer known.

On four separate occasions, Choppy made it a point to use Adele lyrics to describe the action. The first instance came early on in the game, when he used lyrics from the song “Chasing Pavements” after a shot was blocked. He waited a little to bust out his second reference, and toward the end of the second quarter, he decided to drop his rendition of “Set Fire to the Rain” on listeners after a made basket. A minute or two later, Choppy used “Rolling in the Deep” to describe a a steal and dunk on a fast break. His evening of covering the pop star ended in the third quarter, when he sang a line or two from “Hello” to sum up some excellent passing that led to a wide open three.

You may listen to this and think “hey, that Choppy guy isn’t an especially good singer,” and you would be right. Don’t worry about offending him too much, because Choppy has a sense of humor about the entire thing.

Hopefully Choppy gets to keep doing play-by-play for basketball games while seamlessly (and appropriately) using lyrics from popular songs. If he takes requests, we’d like to see him incorporate Run the Jewels lyrics into a call of a game.
