A former Dolphins player says Nick Saban cut him because he left Miami to visit his dying father.

P.K. Sam was a member of the Dolphins practice squad in 2006 when he was abruptly cut. The former pro wide receiver says he lost his job because the then-Dolphins and current Alabama head coach was upset he left the team to be with his family.

Sam was up early on Wednesday and tweeted a “thank you” to Saban for cutting him a decade earlier.

It’s impossible for us to know exactly why a journeyman wideout gets cut by an NFL team, but Sam seems sure it was his decision to visit his dad. He continued tweeting on Wednesday that Saban was upset he left the team so close to being elevated to the active roster.

Sam played for a number of teams in the NFL and Canadian Football League in his pro career. He was drafted by the Patriots 164th overall in the 2004 Draft. Sam appeared in two games for the Pats during their Super Bowl-winning season, then bounced around to four more teams in between CFL teams. He was last with the Buffalo Bills on a reserve contract in 2009. He has no career stats.

People are certainly skeptical of his accusations, but Sam’s adamant that’s the reason for his dismissal. He’s replied to a number of people explaining his case throughout the day.

Either way, it wasn’t a move that ended Sam’s career. Sam was actually re-signed by Miami in 2007 after Saban left the Dolphins and returned to college football. Good luck getting him to answer a question about Sam in the leadup to the playoff, Bama beat writers.
