Niners Offensive Tackle Jonathan Martin Wasn’t About To Let A Shoplifter Bully Him At A Versace Store

Jonathan Martin

You may remember former Miami Dolphins and current San Francisco 49ers OT Jonathan Martin as one of the central figures in the Dolphins’ bullying story from November 2013. On Thursday Martin was back in the news, but this time as a hero who helped security at a Versace store subdue a shoplifter.

Martin told Yahoo Sports that on Thursday afternoon, he and a friend were out shopping in Los Angeles when they noticed a shoplifter running from a Versace store. He then ran into the store and assisted a security guard in subduing a second alleged shoplifter, even punching him several times.

“I didn’t even think,” Martin said. “I just reacted. It wasn’t till later when [my friend] said, ‘He could have had a gun.’ I didn’t even think about it. I just wanted to help. It took maybe 30 seconds. It all happened so fast you don’t really think about it. You just sort of react.”

If there’s one thing we learned from The Blind Side, it’s that offensive tackles have a predisposition to springing into action and helping people in need. And that was a very smart movie, so obviously this story of Martin being a hero at the mall is not surprising. And just think, if he doesn’t make the 49ers out of training camp next season, he could always be the next Paul Blart.
