Orioles Pitcher Turns Himself In On Murder Charge

After your New Year’s celebration, you only had to worry about a hangover, mainly because you’re stupid and forgot to stay hydrated before going to sleep (I did). When Alfredo Simon woke up on the first morning of 2011, he had a little more than too much pink champagne and found himself accused of killing a man and wounding another. He finally decided to turn himself in today for that wild and crazy night.

CNN:

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Alfredo Simon surrendered to National Police early Monday morning to face murder charges in the death of Michael Esteban Castillo, 25, police said.

Simon is also accused of wounding Castillo’s 17-year-old brother, Starlin. The injuries to the brother are not life-threatening, police said.

Police spokesman Maximo Baez said the major leaguer turned in his gun as part of the investigation into the shooting in the Los Salados section of the town of Luperon, in Puerto Plata province, early Saturday.

Simon is scheduled to appear at the courthouse in Puerto Plata for arraignment Monday, the official said.

If Simon’s resolution for this new year was “get charged with murder and ruin my life,” he’s an overachiever. What’s he going to do for the rest of the year? Oh, probably go to prison? Yeah, that makes sense.

Also, I love how at the end of most of these, the story gives you the stats of the season the person last played. It gauges the level of how much you care that they won’t be on your team any more. “Oh, this guy was 4-2 with a 4.93 ERA with 17 saves? Dammit! That’s like one of our best pitchers!” If the player in this case was Chris Tillman, no one would care.
