Apparently goofballs on the internet are not the only people who find “Golden State blew a 3-1 Finals lead to the Cavaliers” jokes hilarious. Unsurprisingly, at least one dude who was on the Cavs enjoys rubbing this into the face of a former Warriors staff member.
Newly-minted Lakers coach Luke Walton appeared on the Open Run podcast, and he dropped this fun little bit of information about Richard Jefferson:
“All summer long, I’ve had to hear from Richard. Anytime we are doing anything competitive and his team is losing, he will be like ‘Hey, guys, I’ve been down way worse than this and won. So don’t worry about it.’ That’s his go-to line all summer.”
Walton, of course, was an assistant coach (and sometimes head coach) for the Warriors from 2014 to the conclusion of last season. Jefferson was the single biggest surprise of the Finals, as he became a crucial member of the Cavaliers’ rotation, especially as the team fought back from the aforementioned 3-1 deficit.
Honestly, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. This was Jefferson’s first ring and he won it in a really memorable way – no one expected him to be a major contributor, they got the ring by coming back from 3-1 down against a 73-win team with the first-ever unanimous league MVP, etc. Of course he’s going to want to talk about it as frequently as possible, and the fact that he’s tight with someone who was employed by the Warriors makes it easy for that to happen.
