This Runner Made The Mistake Of Celebrating His Victory A Moment Too Early

The hardest of the hardcore runners went out for Fourth of July themed races yesterday. This typically humid holiday presents not only physical but mental challenges. The rest of the world still languishes in bed while the masochistic ones pin on a race bib and timing chip.

At the Peachtree 10K race in Atlanta, one runner made the mistake of congratulating himself before he truly won the race. Ben Payne threw up his arm in victory as he approached the finish line. This small movement threw his pace off just enough to allow British Olympian Scott Overall to overtake him at the last possible moment.

Sadly for the American runner, his faux pas was captured by finish line cameras. Payne still beat most of the estimated 60,000 runners on the course, but this video will live on forever.

Overall tweeted about his victory and couldn’t resist a little good-natured dig.
