There’s this thing in college football where any time South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier does anything, people freak out about it. Like the time Jadeveon Clowney took a picture of him at an Arby’s. Or when he gave a super short press conference after the loss to Tennessee. Or when he rolls into SEC Media Days like he owns the place (he pretty much does). Or pretty much any time he talks about Clemson.

So clearly the fact that Spurrier finally decided to join the masses on Twitter was going to lead to a similar outpouring of excitement. Type in “Steve Spurrier Twitter” into Google and see how many articles are up already. This is another article about Steve Spurrier on Twitter even if it is an article that is partially about the articles about Steve Spurrier being on Twitter.

The Head Ball Coach (HBC) galvanizes people. It’s not hard to see why. Most coaches act like their jobs are everything to them, like recruiting is the only thing that matters, like their molding of young men responsibility will turn them to stone faster than Medusa would.

Spurrier golfs, he smiles, he wears visors, he has fun and so on and so forth. He treats coaching differently than a lot of other coaches do, and it is nice and good when people are themselves and bring their own energy to a profession.

That’s probably why people in general are excited to see Spurrier on Twitter. It’s another chance for him to show off his personality, throw some shade (or, if you’re more inclined, embody the Hatin’ Ass Spurrier character that the folks at EDSBS write so well) and generally just be Steve Spurrier.

In an interview with ESPN’s Chris Low, Spurrier explained his rationale in a typically HBC way:

“Some of the assistant coaches here had been telling me I needed to do it and put some things out there like everybody else does. I’ll put little messages out here and there. I guess people watch that Twitter all day. Some people do anyway. How could you have the patience to do that? I’m not going to be on it every day. I can promise you that.”

As first tweets go, they weren’t so bad. They’re not nearly as weird as anything Jim Harbaugh puts out there, but they’re a start. And of course he didn’t miss out on a chance to take a jab at Clemson in the process.

It is not just fans and media members who are happy. Coaches are as well.

Now when Miles and Spurrier are teaming up to make Updog and BOFA jokes on Twitter in like two months just remember that today was the day those seeds were planted.
