Before we get into John Oliver’s excellent parody video, some background on the target of said clip, Jack Warner: He’s a politician in Trinidad and Tobago and a former FIFA executive-committee member from 1983 to 2011. He was investigated a number of times for ethics violations, and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) found him guilty of fraud against FIFA in 2013. Two weeks ago, Warner was one of several officials indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for wire fraud, racketeering and money laundering.
In an effort to clear his name, Warner produced an ad for Trinidad TV called “The Gloves Are Off,” in which he accused FIFA of rigging the 2010 Trinidad and Tobago national election. It was completely nonsensical.
All of that brings us to Oliver, who has quickly become FIFA’s Eliot Ness. In a four-minute segment that aired on TV6 in Trinidad, Oliver delivered a parody of Warner’s video titled, “The Mittens of Disapproval Are On.”
This is John Oliver at his best. He’s the hero soccer needs right now.
