Tony Stewart Has Changed His Mind, Will Not Race Today

Hours after saying “business as usual” following the death of Kevin Ward, Jr., Tony Stewart and his team have changed course and will not race in today’s event at Watkins Glen. Regan Smith will take Stewart’s place as a result.

Greg Zipadelli, Stewart-Haas Racing Competition Director, spoke on behalf of Tony Stewart and the entire team this morning during a press conference.

The team also released this statement.

“A tragic accident took place last night during a sprint car race in which Tony Stewart was participating. Tony was unhurt, but a fellow competitor lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We’re still attempting to sort through all the details and we appreciate your understanding during this difficult time.”

As of now, there are no charges pending but an investigation is ongoing.
