UFC Fight Night 109 was one of those low-key events that you may have missed while grilling on Memorial Day weekend, but the action was worth tuning into, especially the main event. Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira knew that they were front and center for a title shot against the winner of Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones (if that fight happens) if they had an impressive win, and that’s exactly what we got from the Swede.

This was one of Alexander Gustafsson’s best performances ever. He looked fast, smooth and was unleashing combos from every angle possible, baffling Teixeira who would have to bite down on his mouthpiece and move forward, hoping to catch Gus with something, anything. Gus has always been a fantastic boxer, but this fight showed him putting together traditional boxing with creative elbows and stunning kicks. Teixeira couldn’t move forward without Gustafsson using his reach perfectly.

That didn’t mean Teixeira didn’t win a few exchanges, but Gus was pushing forward so often and with such beautiful combos, it didn’t really matter. Anything Teixeira did was overshadowed by the superlative combat brought forth by Gus. Multistrike combos, and his devastating, lengthy uppercut would tear up Teixeira, leaving his face covered in blood.

As the fight went on, the narrative changed from being in awe of Gus’ striking, to being in awe of Teixeira’s heart. He would move forward and continue to land power strikes. Could Gus end this? Yep. It was like a video game. Three power uppercuts, one after another, would finally finish the fight. Brilliance from Gustafsson.

After the fight, covered in another man’s blood, Gustafsson proposed to his girlfriend and got engaged in the middle of the Octagon. Awwww.

So, about that rematch, Jon.
