This NHL Goalie Thinks Nelson Mandela Was A Great Athlete And A Good Guy On And Off The Ice

Remember that time Nelson Mandela took the puck, went coast-to-coast in the Stanley Cup finals and scored the game-winning goal? No? You don’t remember that? Wait sorry, that was Bobby Orr. My bad they look alike.

Reporter
: “Nelson Mandela, one of the most significant historical figures of the 20th centruy. What knowledge or awareness do you have of him growing up?”
Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier: “Obviously he was one of the most known athletes in the world. Being the type of person he was on the ice and off the ice.”

OH NO! This is so, so cringeworthy. Poor Jonathan Bernier. And he just kept digging himself a bigger hole.

I mean, if you’re going to attend a “Nelson Mandela” gala (hosted by your boss), you might want to WIKI the guy before you go. Damn. For what it’s worth, Bernier has since apologized.

“I’m embarrassed. I didn’t mean to offend him, his legacy. I got flustered with the red carpet and I was nervous. I think everyone makes mistakes and that was me that night.”

Poor guy.
