Seattle Bar Bans Google Glass Before Its Even Available To The Public

In what’s perhaps an excessively premature move, a Seattle bar, the 5 Point Cafe, has banned patrons from wearing Google Glass.

Google Glass is, of course, Google’s ongoing effort to keep you from wasting your precious bodily fluids by exchanging them in any way, shape, or form with strangers by mounting a computer to your face and making you look like a total dork.

While it is half-joke, the 5 Point is apparently concerned with the privacy of its customers who aren’t wearing them, according to owner Dave Meinert:

…part of it’s serious…because we don’t let people film other people or take photos unwanted of people in the bar, because it is kind of a private place that people go.”

And to be fair, Meinert has a point. Just ask any teacher who has ever had a photograph posted to Facebook, even if it wasn’t theirs, people get crazy fast when it comes to the idea that adults consume alcohol in social settings.

Beyond that, though, we can’t help but wonder if this will really be necessary. Google Glass costs $1500 and is currently only available to Google employees and a few essay contest winners. Secondly, we don’t really see them catching on in social situations like bars. The appeal of a smartphone in a bar for the socially awkward is the fact that it offers a litany of excuses to not look at people.

Also, they’re near Amazon’s new digs, and Amazon probably has Kindle Transparency on the way if Google Glass catches on.
