The day after the final game of the NFL’s regular season is known as “Black Monday.” It’s when the coach who you totally knew wasn’t the right choice from day one gets fired. This week is one long Black Monday for TV stars and writers. Seemingly everything, from The Muppets to The Grinder to Nashville, has been canceled, and I’m pretty sure there are no series left on TV except The Big Bang Theory and reruns of The King of Queens. Oh yeah, and ABC’s Downward Dog, the best talking dog show since the last talking dog show.
Here’s the premise.
Downward Dog is about a struggling millennial, Nan (Allison Tolman), from the point of view of her lonely and philosophical dog, Martin. One session at obedience school already makes them realize that even at their worst, they may be the best thing for each other.
Downward Dog combines so many of my favorite things: Allison Tolman from Fargo, talking dogs, and, well, I guess that’s about it. But what more do I need? This is already my favorite new show, at least until some smart network decides to reboot Poochinski. “Look at me, I’ve become a dog.”
They don’t write ’em like they used to.
