John Oliver has already tackled many serious, troubling, and depressing subjects during his short reign over Last Week Tonight, but none more so “all of the above” than last night’s eye-opening segment on just how irreparable the United States prison system really is. There is of course plenty of humor — capped off with an inspired muppet sing-a-long that goes in a bunch of different directions and deserves its own Emmy nom — sprinkled in with all the making you a more informed person, but man it’s difficult to get past the overriding “we’re f*cked” tone of the subject.
At least there’s some hope that Oliver’s overdue Cheerios flavor call out will result in some much needed change.
