UPROXX 20: Julie Ann Emery Of ‘Better Call Saul’ Loves Iced Tea And Tennessee Football

Julie Ann Emery is an actress probably best known for her portrayal of Betsy Kettleman on AMC’s Better Call Saul. You may have also seen her playing Ida Thurman on FX’s Fargo, as well as on shows like ER, Damages, Suits and in films such as Hitch. Additionally, Emery has many theater credits on her resume, including featured roles in shows like GypsyA Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Annie. The season finale of Better Call Saul airs tonight on AMC.

Julie was nice enough to take a few minutes out of her busy schedule recently to answer a few questions from us.

1. You walk into a bar. What do you order from the bartender?

An Iced Tea. I am an Iced Tea addict. And I get dance-on-the-table drunk from one drink. If it is an “I need a drink” kind of day, a Moscow Mule.

2. Who’s your favorite person to follow on Twitter?

This changes on an almost weekly basis. Currently, Patton Oswalt. He went on the greatest twitter rant ever this week about political correctness killing comedy. During big news cycles: Anderson Cooper, Christiane Amanpour (she is a bad ass). During football season: @Vol_Sports (I can get a twitter play by play anywhere). And during Better Call Saul episodes, everyone should tweet to writer @TomSchnauz. He’ll love it. (No, he won’t, but it will be entertaining for me) ;)

3. What’s currently waiting for you on your DVR/TiVO?

Walking Dead. (If you spoiler this for me, we can’t be friends.)

4. It’s your last meal. What are you going out with?

Some bizarro mash up of: Drink: Iced Tea (obviously). Appetizer: Nachos. Meal: fried chicken, cornbread, fresh sliced heirloom tomatoes, and mac-n-cheese. Dessert: peach pie with homemade whipped cream. Wow, I have given this a lot of thought. I’m sure that says something about me that I don’t want to know.

5. What websites do you visit on a regular basis?

Huffington Post, Deadline, Twitter, Drudge, Playbill, Broadwayworld.

6. What’s the most frequently played song on your mobile device?

A round robin of anything Dixie Chicks and Nora Jones “Sunrise.”

7. The first face that comes to mind when you think “punchable?”

I could tell you, but I’d have to send Betsy Kettleman to kill you.

8. What’s the last thing you Googled?

Halo.5.trailer.

9. Dogs or cats?

Dogs. All the way.

10. Best concert of your life was…?

My husband Kevin Earley singing at Disney Hall. My guy can SING! (And it is supremely sexy).

11. What book are you most likely to give as a gift?

Game of Thrones. I don’t even care if you are into the genre. Read it.

12. What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?

My husband makes me an entire package of Birthday Bacon every year on my… wait for it…. birthday. He makes it exactly how I like it, cooked in a cast iron skillet, and crispy. If you hold one end, it stands up straight like a stick crispy. In a stranger kind of way, when I was in theater school, I was in ballet class one morning in January when a friend came in and said they were towing my car (I parked in the wrong lot). I ran out in my leotard and tights and sat on my car so the tow guy couldn’t take it away. I couldn’t afford to get it back if he took it. An older woman, who was taking a music extension class walked by, berated him, and then paid him off to unhitch my car from the two truck. She then gave me a snack, refused to give me an address so I could pay her back, and told me to just do a kindness for someone else. I never knew her name, but I will never forget her face and I think of her often. I also do my best to pay it forward whenever I can.

13. South Park or Family Guy?

Family Guy.

14. You have an entire day to do whatever you want. What would you do?

Eat Birthday Bacon, hike either the Grand Canyon or over Paintbrush Divide in the Grand Tetons, then soak in a huge tub with my guy until we are both wrinkly.

15. What movie can you not resist watching if it’s on?

Independence Day. “Now that’s what I call a Close Encounter.”

16. The sports team or teams you’re most passionate about?

Tennessee Volunteers. Go Big Orange!!

17. Where did you eat the best meal of your life?

In a restaurant with no posted name, down an alley in Rome. Casa Conti near the Spanish Steps.

18. The last movie you saw in a theater?

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

19. Who was your first celebrity crush?

Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

20. What would you cook if Nic Cage was coming to your house for dinner?

Chili & Cornbread. Is he a football fan? Because we would have to watch football while eating the chili.
