Chad Smith Joined Foo Fighters On Stage For A Cover Of Faces’ ‘Stay With Me’

This is shaping up to be the summer of the Foo Fighters, although a lot of that owes to the fact that Dave Grohl broke his leg in Sweden. On Wednesday night at Citi Field in New York, the band broke out a rare encore, and invited a special guest to join them. Chad Smith, erstwhile drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the world’s foremost Will Ferrell impersonator, jumped behind Taylor Hawkins’ drum kit so that Hawkins could take center stage to sing “Stay With Me” by Faces.

While Hawkins did his best Rod Stewart impersonation, Smith pounds on the drums, as he usually does. Of course, Grohl is there, too, sitting in his massive, ridiculous throne due to his broken leg, and dropping the occasional bon mot to help keep the audience entertained. Remarking upon the time in 1999 when Foo Fighters were opening for RHCP, he quipped, “That’s when we learned to be a band. It’s sure as hell when we learned how to party.”

The audio on the video isn’t great, but it’s good enough to hear clearly if you want to see Smith and Foo Fighters take on Faces’ classic. Nothing can slow down Foo Fighters and keep them from having fun, clearly. This is not the first time they’ve covered “Stay With Me,” having done it several times before. The difference this time was the presence of Smith on the drums. Maybe next time they can bust out Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.”
