Weekend Preview: ‘True Detective’ And Other Stuff To Watch When You’re Done Binging ‘Wet Hot American Summer’

Wet Hot American Summer (Netflix, whenever you damn well please) — The principal cast is back with, like, half of Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce for eight, half-hour episodes in the Netflix reboot of the iconic 2001 summer camp comedy. See the origin of the talking can of vegetables, Detective Stabler with a “Flock of Seagulls” haircut, and Jon Hamm tryin’ to kill people while Showalter pines after female counselors and Bradley Cooper discovers himself.

True Detective (HBO, Sunday 9 p.m.) — After Velcoro’s Scarface 2 audition last week and the full-moon sex party extraction mission, it’s safe to say our cliche detectives have officially reached the jump off. Vince Vaughn is still looking for that missing money.

Masters of Sex (Showtime, Sunday 10 p.m.) — Josh Charles really turns on the charm, and Dr. Masters aims to get back into Johnson’s good graces.

Ray Donovan (Showtime, Sunday 9 p.m.) — With his brother out of the slammer, Ray’s got to look inward to see if he can spot that tiny conscience of his as Katie Holmes braces for whatever cruel tricks her father is working on.

Hell on Wheels (AMC, Saturday 9 p.m.) — With the Chinese workers demanding better wages and conditions from Central Pacific, Cullen Bohannon and Chang are again at odds as Bohannon fights for his professional security… and his safety.

Hannibal (NBC, Saturday 10 p.m.) — Will tries to put himself in a serial killer’s shoes in an effort to track down Francis Dolarhyde and eventually seeks Hannibal’s help in the matter. There’s no way that ends poorly, right?

Jay Pharoah: Can I Be Me? (Showtime, Saturday 10 p.m.) — The irony in the name of this SNL veteran’s new comedy special is that it’s overflowing with his celebrity impersonations. Chris Rock, President Obama, Jay Z, and others will all make appearances (as impersonations, of course).

HUMANS (AMC, Sunday 9 p.m.) — Turns out that having a robot maid doesn’t eliminate classic teenage angst from the equation, as Mattie and Laura have it out over the significance of Tom.

Ballers (HBO, Sunday 10 p.m.) — The Rock pulls a page from Everlast’s playbook as the latest episode of Ballers is all about the ends. Spence tries to talk Charles into getting back into the football life, and Ricky’s left looking like a clown when his boo finds out about his “fun house.”

The Brink (HBO, Sunday 10:30 p.m.) — Jack Black takes a little “trip” (that’s a reference to his drug use) and conducts some complicated diplomatic business with China, while Porn Stache is in a fight to the death that he’s expected to throw.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO, Sunday 11 p.m.) — You know the drill by now. Oliver and Co. will tackle a hot button issue in hilarious fashion to open our eyes, split our sides and drop our jaws, though not necessarily in that particular order.
