A Spanish Politician Gave His King ‘Game Of Thrones’ DVDs To Help Understand Spain’s ‘Political Crisis’

Game of Thrones is a lot of things. It’s a well-made fantasy series about power struggles and dragons. It’s a worldwide phenomenon that has turned its cast and showrunners into in-demand names in Hollywood. It’s the most popular television series among torrenters and most of your friends (not mutually exclusive). And now, thanks to a Spanish politician named Pablo Iglesias, it is also a gift someone gave to an actual king to help him better understand his own country’s “political crisis.”

From IBI Times:

“I told him that he is sure to like the series and that it will give him some keys for understanding the political crisis in Spain, ” Iglesias told reporters, according to the El Pais newspaper.

It could have been an awkward moment given that Iglesias has previously called for the abolition of the monarchy. He has also requested a formal meeting with the royal and was never given an official response.

The king reportedly received the gift “with good humor,” but holy hell. Think about this one for a second. A guy who has called for the end of the monarchy gave the king the box set of a show where — spoilers — two of the last three kings were assassinated (one by people’s rebellion, one poisoned by a trusted advisor at his wedding) and the one in the middle got gored to death by a boar during a drunken hunting trip, and he did this to help the king understand “the political crisis” in his country. The balls on this guy, right? I mean, that’s practically a threat.

That said, he does have a point. Lots of useful tips on this show.
